Perry Hall Boys Basketball: The Inside Hoop!

By: Kate S.

It’s the last 60 seconds of the game, and you want to make one more shot. You dribble down the court, fake out your guard, coach yells “Four Special!” There’s ten seconds left, you pass it. The ball gets passed back, and five, four, three, two… the buzzer sounds, and you just made a three pointer for the team. It’s time to get the dirt on the JV and Varsity Boys Basketball Team. It’s time that the truth is revealed.

The JV Boys basketball team is tearing up the court. Practicing two hours a day, six days a week, it’s no wonder that they have a record of 9-2.

The team has defeated Kenwood, Eastern Tech, Patapsco, Towson, Dundalk, and Franklin; but they just can’t seem to get a hold of Parkville, where the Gators lost 44 to 71 in the December 19th game, and the January 16th game, where the gators lost 40 to 46. “We play an outstanding defense,” says Linwood G., sophomore. “We worked hard to get where we are now,” he says. The teams’ hard work and dedication shined through during the Patapsco game, on January 9th; where the Gators won 43 to 32. The team played well together “our best so far, we had excellent defense!” says Coach Franey. The MVPs were Pablo S, who scored 11 pts; Tony B., Linwood G., and Eamon M. The team also stole a victory from Dundalk. With a close game throughout, the gators took control in the third quarter, winning the game 43 to 37.

“All fifteen players are working hard to improve this season,” says Coach Franey. “The team needs to work on foul shooting and executing on offense.” The team prepares for a game with curl drills, working on fundamentals, and practicing offensive and defensive sets. “I got my teammates into the game,” says Linwood, “we get along pretty well and joke around a lot.”

The JV team is trying hard, with high hopes in winning the County Championship, the only team that’s going to be a challenge this year is “The Perry Hall Gators,” says Coach Franey.

The Boys Varsity Basketball team has truly worked hard this season. Even with a record of 3-13, their commitment and dedication shows in their practices and games.

The teams, first victory this season was against Eastern Tech, on January 4th ; with a final score of 58 to 41. “We only won one game, but we have picked up our intensity,” said Brandon L., captain. The following game, on January 9th, was against Patapsco, where the gators lost; 48 to 55, MVP was Rich M. “Coming off of a win- this was a let down,” said Coach Evanosky. The Gators were in the lead for the first half, but lost control slowly after the beginning of 3rd quarter. The Gators picked up speed and stole two other victories, one against Franklin on January 23rd, with a final score of 68 to 61; and the other against Dulaney, on January 25th, with a final score of 94 to 84.

The teams’ goals this season are to improve on last years’ performance. Brandon L., and Kalipha B. are really trying hard to improve this season. “I have increased my scoring and improved my turnover/assist ratio,” says Brandon. Currently there are two injuries, Brandon L., who’s out with a concussion; and Kalipha B., who’s out with a fractured arm. Brandon plans to be back on the court by next week, where on Wednesday the gators will be playing Woodlawn, an incredibly strong team. The team also had an injury in the beginning of the season, Matt W. who had a ruptured spleen. “We did miss Matt W. for the first 8 games,” says Coach Evanosky.

Before a difficult game, the team reviews the opposing teams scouting report, watches the film, and focuses on that team in practice. With many drills such as the elbow shooting drill, and the defensive slides, it’s not hard for the Gators to break a sweat. “As a whole we need to work on spacing, passing, defense and rebounding,” says Brandon, “we have to be more aggressive on offense and defense.”

The Boys Varsity Basketball team had a rough start, but nothing’s going to stand in this teams’ way of ending the season with a BANG!
